Her participation in this year's FIFA Women's World Cup began in 2011. Between 2015 and the year 2019, her contributions have helped players from the U.S. Women's World Cup winning team achieve consecutive championships. In 2018, she was named cocaptain of the national team. The two goals scored by Rapinoe were part of the 4-3 United States victory against Australia in the Olympics of 2020 in Tokyo. Japan, however had to wait until 2021 after the COVID-19 virus had passed.
